For over 85 years, United Way of York County has worked in our community to improve people’s lives. In 1921, a group of community leaders founded The York Welfare Federation to raise money to establish a community fund to support charitable organizations. These leaders recognized that a community fund requires the efforts of everyone to advance the common good. That first campaign raised $74,000 and assisted 17 York County health and human-service agencies.
Over the years, the name of our organization has changed from The York Welfare Federation to United Fund to United Community Services of York County and, finally, United Way of York County; the mission, however, of raising community funds to meet the growing and changing needs of people living in York County, has remained the same.
United Way, however, has adapted over the years and now collaborates with other public and private organizations to engage the community in addressing the complex issues facing York County. By developing initiatives that get at the root causes of these issues, United Way partners with other organizations to find solutions and fund programs that improve the lives of people in York County. We also continue to work with member agencies to provide services that address the immediate and continuing needs of York County families and individuals.
Through the Community Fund, United Way of York County helps people in need in our community and works to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. Together, we can make a difference and create real, lasting change that matters to you and to our community.
