Youth Volunteerism

United Way of York County started the Youth Volunteer Initiative (YVI) in 2001 to work with schools and agencies to engage young people in volunteerism.  Its mission is to develop and aggressively promote a comprehensive youth volunteer program empowering agencies, schools, and other volunteer organizations to mobilize youth in addressing York County’s needs.  The YVI is housed within the Volunteer Center of the United Way of York County and grew out of the need to develop a process for reaching out to and educating youth about the importance of volunteerism and civic engagement.

The YVI Coordinator compiles a Volunteer Opportunities List which highlights youth-centered volunteer opportunities in the county.  The YVI Coordinator also organizes the local observances of national days of service such as Martin Luther King Day, National Family Volunteer Day and National Youth Day. In addition, the YVI Coordinator posts current and upcoming youth-centered volunteer opportunities and special events on Volunteer Solutions , which is a database of volunteer service opportunities.
