What is the Tocqueville Society?

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is a group of civic leaders with a strong commitment and dedication to our community. Through annual gifts of $10,000 or more, our members make a measurable difference and inspire others to be a part of the change. When you support United Way of York County, you have the satisfaction of knowing your gift will be efficiently invested locally to maximize impact.

Your generosity to the United Way of York County Impact Fund tackles challenges in education, health, and economic mobility. Tocqueville Society continues to play an important role in the campaign. Thanks to you:

  • More than 33% of our annual revenue comes from the generosity of Tocqueville Society members.
  • Tocqueville Society is growing! Thank you to the fourteen new members who joined last year.
  • Thank you for leading by example to inspire others to join you.

Tocqueville Society members are celebrated for both their leadership in the community and their impactful philanthropy at the highest level. Enjoy intimate social events with other Tocqueville Society members, and engage with members of First Capital Club, Women United and Emerging Leaders Society.

A Message from John Eyster, TocquevilleA man smiling animatedly towards a camera Society Chair

“United Way and philanthropy have guided my wife and family’s life since I got involved. I always trusted and still do trust that United Way will make wise decisions and will help people have better quality lives. They have been terrific stewards of the funds they receive and are a community pillar.

As we embark on our new issue-based transformation to lift 8,000 working families into sustainability, we know we will need everyone’s assistance. It is a bold step but the right step at the right time. The people in this population work hard every day to offer the basics to their families and will work ever so hard to continue to make the best use of the United Way assistance.

Please join me in being a part of making York County a great place for everyone and allow everyone the best chance for a sustainable budget and lifestyle."

1921 Legacy CircleThree people talking and smiling

In honor of the year United Way of York County was founded, the 1921 Legacy Circle recognizes people who have remembered United Way of York County in their legacy plans. Our members have named United Way of York County as a beneficiary of a planned gift or made a cash gift to our endowment. Examples of gifts include a bequest, appreciated stock, gifts of life insurance, or gifts of retirement accounts. The lasting benefit our members receive is the satisfaction of making a lasting impact to the community’s well-being.

Step-Up Program

Many donors join Tocqueville Society as a Step-Up member. The Step-Up Program provides an opportunity to gradually increase your giving over a 3-year period, while receiving recognition and benefits for all 3 years.
